At only 24 years old, Gramophone’s 2017 “Young Artist of the Year” Beatrice Rana is making waves on the international classical music scene, arousing admiration and interest from conductors, critics and audiences around the world.
Ms. Rana performs regularly at the world’s most esteemed concert halls and festivals including Vienna’s Konzerthaus and Musikverein, Zurich’s Tonhalle, London’s Wigmore Hall and Royal Festival Hall, Paris’s Théâtre des Champs-Elysées, Lucerne’s KKL, Berlin Konzerthaus, Cologne Philharmonie, Milan’s Societàdei Concerti, Ferrara Musica, Verbier Festival, Klavier Festival Ruhr, Lugano Festival, La Roque d’Anthéron Festival, Montpellier Radio-France Festival, Lanaudière Festival,Vancouver Recital Society, San Francisco Performances, Atlanta’s Spivey Hall and Washington D.C.’s Kennedy Center.
She collaborates with conductors of the highest level such as Riccardo Chailly, Antonio Pappano, Yannick Nézet-Séguin, Fabio Luisi, James Conlon, Emmanuel Krivine, Osmo Vänska, Jun Märkl, Trevor Pinnock, Mirga Grazinyte-Tyla, Lahav Shani, Andrés Orozco-Estrada, Susanna Mälkki, Leonard Slatkin and Zubin Mehta. Orchestral appearances include the London Philharmonic Orchestra, City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra, Philadelphia Orchestra, Los Angeles Philharmonic, NHK Symphony, Orchestre National de France, Orchestra dell’Accademia Nazionale di Santa Cecilia, Filarmonica della Scala, Helsinki Philharmonic and Royal Flemish Philharmonic.
During the 2017/18 season, Ms. Rana plays recitals at Amsterdam’s Concertgebouw as part of the Piano Masters Series, Cologne’s Philharmonie, Lucerne Piano Festival and Toronto’s Koerner Hall and tours with Antonio Pappano and Orchestra dell’Accademia Nazionale di Santa Cecilia to the Enescu Festival, Abu Dhabi Festival and Rochester NY. She performs with Yuri Temirkanov and the St. Petersburg Philharmonic, Emmanuel Krivine with the Orchestre National de France, Osmo Vänska with Helsinki Philharmonic, and Mikhail Jurowski with the London Philharmonic. In Asia, she tours Korea with the Lucerne Symphony Orchestra and plays with the Seoul Philharmonic. In North America, she makes debuts with Dallas Symphony, Seattle Symphony, and the National Arts Centre Orchestra in Ottawa and Montreal. In 2018, she will make debuts with the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra under Trevor Pinnock, Camerata Salzburg with Sir Roger Norrington, and Tonkünstler Orchestra with Yutaka Sado.
The 2016/17 season will remain a milestone in Ms. Rana’s career with the release of Bach’s Goldberg Variations on Warner Classics. The disc debuted at No. 1 on the U.K. Classical Charts and was praised by reviewers worldwide: in addition to being called “a supremely intelligent reading” by the Sunday Times, it garnered her the Gramophone Awards “Young Artist of the Year”. She toured with the Goldbergs with concerts in Paris’ Théâtre des Champs-Elysées, London’s Wigmore Hall, Berlin’s Konzerthaus, Aix en Provence Festival de Pâques, Tokyo’s Toppan Hall, San Francisco Performances, Porto’s Casa da Musica, Birmingham’s Town Hall, Mecklenburg-Vorpommern Festival, among other major venues.
In Summer 2017, Ms. Rana made notable debuts at the BBC Proms with Sir Andrew Davis and the BBC Symphony, in New York at Lincoln Center’s Mostly Mozart Festival with Louis Langrée, and at the Hollywood Bowl with the Los Angeles Philharmonic and Vasily Petrenko.
An exclusive Warner Classics recording artist, Ms. Rana’s first album, released in Fall 2015, featured Prokofiev’s Piano Concerto No. 2 and Tchaikovsky’s Piano Concerto No. 1 with Antonio Pappano and Orchestra dell’Accademia Nazionale di Santa Cecilia. The disc received unanimous international acclaim; in addition to being named Gramophone’s “Editor’s Choice” and BBC Magazine’s “Recording of the Month”, it garnered Ms. Rana BBC Magazine’s 2017 “Newcomer Award”.
Beatrice Rana came to public attention in 2011 after winning First Prize and all special jury prizes at the Montreal International Competition. Her very promising career was brought to an even higher level in 2013 when she won the Silver Medal and the Audience Award at the 14th Van Cliburn International Piano Competition. In September 2015, she was named a BBC New Generation Artist, and in April 2016 she was awarded a fellowship from the Borletti-Buitoni Trust.
Born in Italy into a family of musicians, Ms. Rana began her piano studies at the age of four and made her orchestral debut at the age of nine, performing Bach Concerto in F Minor. She obtained her Piano Degree under the guidance of Benedetto Lupo, her lifetime mentor, at the Nino Rota Conservatory in Monopoli, where she also studied composition with Marco della Sciucca. She later studied with Arie Vardi at the Hochschule fur Musik in Hannover. She currently lives in Rome.
