Cristian Macelaru closed a magnificent inaugural season at the Cabrillo Festival of Contemporary Music Festival with much fanfare and glowing reviews on August 11 and 12, 2017! The programs featured world premieres by Jake Heggie, Christopher Rountree, Gabriella Smith, Karim Al-Zand, a U.S. premiere by Gerald Barry, a Westcoast premiere by William Bolcom, and performances of works by Jörg Widmann and Cindy McTee.

In a review of the closing concerts, Jessica Balik of the San Francisco Classical Voice said “Cabrillo Festival Closes With a Bang”!

Barbara Rose Shuler of the Santa Cruz Sentinel wrote: “Macelaru and the ensemble met the moment at the Santa Cruz Civic with their superbly executed contemporary works and world premieres.”

Scott MacClelland of the Performing Arts Monterey Bay said: “The entire concert program [was] delivered with an abundance of brio by Cristian Măcelaru and the Festival Orchestra. The orchestra sounded marvelous, and appears clearly comfortable with Cristi. The question up front for many people, audience and orchestra alike, is how the transition to a new music director is going? For this listener and observer, there doesn’t seem to have been even a ripple in the process. As a former member of the Festival Orchestra, it would have been a pleasure to play under Cristi Măcelaru. The Festival is in for a good future.”
