February 2023 Artist Updates from Primo Artists

Itzhak Perlman, violin: From February 19 to 26, Itzhak Perlman embarks on a four-date tour to Arizona and Texas. He plays recitals at the Mesa Arts Center, San Antonio’s  Tobin Center for the Performing Arts, and Houston Symphony’s Jones Hall in his sixth appearance with the Houston Symphony as part of his three-season artistic partnership with the orchestra. On February 23, he plays a sold-out show of his multi-media program An Evening with Itzhak Perlman at the Long Center for the Performing Arts in Austin.

Beatrice Rana, piano: Beatrice Rana makes her National Symphony Orchestra debut on February 2 and 4, playing Robert Schumann’s Piano Concerto with James Gaffigan at The Kennedy Center. On February 3, her much-anticipated album featuring Clara Schumann and Robert Schumann Piano Concertos with Yannick Nézet-Séguin and the Chamber Orchestra of Europe will be released on Warner Classics. On February 9 and 10, she makes her Chicago Symphony Orchestra debut in Rachmaninoff's Paganini Variations with Lahav Shani.

Randall Goosby, violin: Randall Goosby returns to his hometown of Memphis, TN to play a recital with pianist Zhu Wang on February 9, presented by the Iris Collective. On February 17 and 18, he makes his New World Symphony debut with Michael Tilson Thomas on the Tchaikovsky Violin Concerto. 

Nicola Benedetti, violin: Nicola Benedetti appears as artist-in-residence at the St. Louis Symphony Orchestra for two consecutive weeks with the orchestra this month, featuring concertos that were written for her. She plays James Macmillan’s Violin Concerto No. 2 with Macmillan conducting on February 10 and 11, followed by Wynton Marsalis’ Violin Concerto on February 18 and 19.

Gemma New, conductor: Gemma New makes her Salzburg debut at the Mozartwoche Festival with the Salzburg Mozarteum Orchestra on February 5. From there, she leads the Bern Symphony Orchestra on February 16 and 17, before heading to London to conduct the BBC Symphony Orchestra at the Barbican on February 24.

Christian Reif, conductor: Christian Reif returns soon on subscription to the Indianapolis Symphony Orchestra and Baltimore Symphony Orchestra. On February 17 and 18, he leads the Indianapolis Symphony in a program that includes Augusta Read Thomas’ Sun Dance and Beethoven Symphony No. 6. From March 2 to 5, he leads the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra on a new work by Elizabeth Ogonek, Brahms Double Concerto for Violin and Cello, and Prokofiev Symphony No. 5.

Aizuri Quartet: On February 12, PR client the Aizuri Quartet performs their program Sunrise at The Kimmel Center, in a sold-out show presented by Philadelphia Chamber Music Society. From there, they embark on a U.S. tour with a new program, The Art of Translation, from February 19 to March 30. Starting at the Krannert Center for Performing Arts on February 19, they will make stops at Ottawa ChamberFest, Impromptu Classic Concerts, Texas Performing Arts, Ford Center, New Orleans Friends of Music, and finally, Millard Auditorium.

Catalyst Quartet: On February 3, PR client the Catalyst Quartet celebrates the release of their latest album, UNCOVERED Volume 3 on Azica Records. The third issue in their series highlighting artists overlooked in classical music because of their race and/or gender. Volume 3 features the works of three American composers, George Walker, Coleridge-Taylor Perkinson, William Grant Still, who lived through the various Black artistic, political, and social projects that transformed the 20th century.

Sphinx Organization: PR client the Sphinx Organization celebrates its 25th anniversary this season and the 2023 Sphinx Competition took place in Detroit from January 26 to 28. In the Senior Division Finals, violinist Njioma Chinyere was awarded First Prize and Audience Choice Prize, among second place violinist, Alejandra Switala, and third place violinist, Dillon Scott. In the Junior Division Finals, cellist Brandon Leonard won First Prize, with second prize awarded to violinist, Gabriela Salvador Riera, and third prize to cellist Vincent Garcia- Hettinger.

Allison Loggins-Hull, composer/flutist: From February 15 to 26, PR client Allison Loggins-Hull embarks on a 5-city tour with Flutronix and Third Coast Percussion. In addition to the world premiere of Loggins-Hull’s Rubix, each ensemble will perform a solo set. The tour begins at Rowan University, followed by performances at Shenandoah Conservatory, Modlin Center for the Arts, Zoellner Arts Center at Lehigh University, and the Clarice Smith Performing Arts Center.

Mary Kouyoumdjian, composer: On February 11 and 12, the La Jolla Symphony presents PR client Mary Kouyoumdjian’s Walking with Ghosts at UC San Diego, conducted by Steven Schick. On February 25, The EMPAC presents the world premiere of Kouyoumdjian and Nigel Maister’s Paper Pianos, performed by Alarm Will Sound.

Steven Mackey, composer: From February 23 to March 2, PR client Steven Mackey’s Red Wood premieres as part of  The Soraya’s Treelogy project. He embarks on a 4 stop Red Wood California tour, as an electric guitar soloist, starting at The Soraya Great Hall at The Valley Arts Center, followed by Hammer Theater Center and Chico Performances, before rounding off at the Sonoma State University on March 2. Of his recent Boston Symphony Orchestra world premiere, Concerto for a Curved Space, The Boston Globe praised, “Mackey’s sonic imagination is coupled with a deep mastery of craft.”

Karen Slack, soprano: This month, PR client Karen Slack performs in both Terrence Blanchard’s Fire Shut Up in My Bones at the Dallas Symphony Orchestra (Feb. 8) and The Dallas Opera’s production of Das Rheingold at Winspear Opera House (Feb. 10-18).

Seth Parker Woods, cello: On February 12 and 13 , PR client Seth Parker Woods performs recitals with pianist Andrew Rosenblum at Dumbarton Oaks in D.C. Later this month, the Seattle Symphony Orchestra will present Wood in the world premiere of Freida Abtan’s My Heart is a River at the Raisbeck Music Center on February 24.
