January 2022 Artist Updates from Primo Artists

James Gaffigan, conductor: James Gaffigan has just been announced as Music Director of the Komische Oper Berlin. The appointment commences with the 2023/24 season and lasts four years. Just prior to the announcement, Gaffigan led a production of Don Carlo with the Deutsche Oper Berlin and performances with the Deutsches Symphonie-Orchester Berlin. He continues in Berlin to lead the Staatskapelle Berlin Orchestra on January 9. On January 13 and January 22, he returns to the Trondheim Symfonierorkester & Opera and Netherlands Radio Orchestra respectively, both where he serves as Principal Guest Conductor. From February 5 to 26, he makes his debut with the Paris Opéra on a production of Manon.

Nicola Benedetti, violin: Nicola Benedetti returns to the States on January 14-15 for the U.S. Premiere of Mark Simpson’s Violin Concerto with Louis Langrée and the Cincinnati Symphony. On January 28-30, she performs Marsalis’ Violin Concerto with the Baltimore Symphony and Marin Alsop. This summer, she will join Andrea Bocelli as a special guest on his World Tour at Scotland’s Caledonian Stadium Inverness on July 1.

Gemma New, conductor: Gemma New leads the Atlanta Symphony in concerts on January 20 & 22 featuring the U.S. Premiere of Joby Talbot’s “Ink Dark Moon” with classical guitarist Miloš Karadaglić. On February 3 & 5, she returns to the National Symphony Orchestra for the first time since her debut described as “meticulously calibrated beauty” on a program featuring the World Premiere of Missy Mazzoli’s Violin Concerto with violinist Jennifer Koh.

Wynton Marsalis, composer: Wynton Marsalis’ Tuba Concerto received its World Premiere by The Philadelphia Orchestra and Principal Tuba Carol Jantsch under Yannick Nézet-Séguin on December 9, 10 & 12. On January 22-23, Marsalis sees the World Premiere of his “Fanfare” by Xian Zhang leading the New Jersey Symphony in celebration of the orchestra’s centennial anniversary. This will mark Marsalis’ first-ever fanfare and is a co-commission with the Pittsburgh Symphony, Cincinnati Symphony, Baltimore Symphony, Detroit Symphony, Grand Teton Music Festival, Milwaukee Symphony and the WDR Sinfonieorchester.

Sean Shepherd, composer: Social Media Client Sean Shepherd will see the World Premiere of his work “Downtime” on February 4, commissioned and performed by the WDR Sinfonieorchester under the direction of our very own Cristian Măcelaru at the Kölner Philharmonie.

Akiko Fujimoto, conductor: Social Media Client Akiko Fujimoto makes her San Francisco Symphony debut on February 17-19 in concerts that honor the late Oakland Symphony Music Director Michael Morgan and feature the San Francisco Symphony Premiere of Florence Price’s Symphony No. 3 in C minor.
